College Football 2013 – Recapping Week 14

The greatest week in college football, rivalry week, provided college fans all around the country everything you could possibly hope.

Texans head coach Gary KubiakSheer entertainment, the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, heart pounding finishes, questionable calls, and the realization that your team is still in the hunt or your dream season has vanished. We should have known that when Fresno State’s dream of a BCS bowl game went up in flames that we were going to be in for a wild weekend.

For all of you SEC haters out there, you got your Christmas wish early with Alabama going down in the Iron Bowl. ‘Bama looked tight right from the start and Auburn continued to do what it does best – run the football and hang around until you make a mistake. Sure enough, Alabama missed 3 field goals and when they needed a conversion on 4th and 1, they failed giving Auburn a chance. The Tigers marched down the field and tied the game up. Then the unthinkable happened, a missed 57 yard FG try and Auburn returns the short kick to win the game. What an ending and for the second game in a row, Auburn wins in dramatic fashion. Meanwhile, in Columbia, SC, the Gamecocks were locked up with their rival to the north, Clemson. USC was hoping that the other team from Columbia, Columbia Missouri that is, would fall to Texas A&M and give the Gamecocks a birth in the SEC title game. The Gamecocks handled the Tigers for their 5th win in a row in the series. Clemson turned the ball over 6 times and Dabo is now 1-5 versus Carolina. The SEC championship game is now set with Missouri and Auburn. How many of you out there predicted that title game on August 30??

Let me say this. I am an SEC honk – the SEC is the best conference in America and a 1 loss team from the SEC deserves to be in the BCS title game. If FSU beats Duke, they deserve to be there. If Ohio State beats Michigan State and they win the Big 10 championship, they do not deserve to be there. Their body of work is not impressive at all. They win a very weak conference and beat a bunch of nobodies out of conference. Wasn’t that the knock on Boise State for all of those years? Why should Ohio State be any different? The Buckeyes would be lucky to finish third in the SEC East OR West. Whoever wins the SEC championship should be in the BCS title game vs. FSU….if FSU can beat Duke. In my opinion, the only way OSU can play for the BCS championship is if Duke beats FSU. Then, and only then, should the Luckeyes deserve a chance to play for the ring. I am sorry, but a FSU vs. OSU title game does not get my juices flowing. It would represent all that is wrong with college football and I am a HUGE fan of the game! Two teams from the 2 weakest conferences ( of the big 5 power conferences ) with the weakest schedules having a chance to play in the biggest game of all. That leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Thank goodness this is the last year for this BCS crap and we may once and for all be able to settle this on the field next year!

Cracking on the Big 10 some more….Is Michigan still in the Big 10 or are they in the MEAC now? How about Wisconsin laying an egg at home to lowly Penn State? After OSU, isn’t Wisconsin the face of the conference? Did Bo and the Cornshuckers lose their 4th game this year….again? Bo has lost 4 games every year since taking over the program but got a big vote of confidence over the weekend from the AD. Mediocrity has set in in Lincoln and it is there to stay.

Speaking of votes of confidence, Will Muschamp got his over the weekend and will be back on the sidelines for the Gators next year. Kevin Sumlin got a new 6 year deal to remain at the helm for the Aggies. I bet he will be glad when Johnny Football and his traveling circus hits the road and goes to the NFL! Texas A&M is investing a lot of money in the program and Kevin is the right man to lead them. There are still a couple of huge coaching decisions to be made. What will happen at USC? Coach Ed has done a wonderful job getting the program going forward again. How about Texas? If the Longhorns beat Baylor this week, will it be enough to save Mack Brown’s job?

Nobody wants to “win” the Heisman. Looks like it may fall in the hands of RB Andre Williams of Boston College!

Conference championship weekend will finally set up the BCS National Championship Game. In the ACC, FSU may have been picked to win the Atlantic, but Duke winning the Coastal?? Great season for Duke and what would happen if FSU overlooks them? How will FSU react as the #1 team in America? Duke has nothing to lose and will play their butts off for Coach Cut! Did anyone pick Stanford to play Arizona State for the PAC 12 championship? Oregon vs. UCLA was the consensus choice. What about the SEC championship game? Who in their right mind would have picked Missouri to meet Auburn? Most experts had South Carolina vs. Alabama. In the Big 10, OSU was a lock but Michigan State ended up as a big surprise!

What if Sparty and the Dookies shock the world this weekend and Auburn beats Missouri? We could have Auburn playing Alabama for the BCS National Championship!!!! NOOOOOO!!!! YES!!!! SEC, SEC, SEC!!!!  Sounds like another “normal” weekend of college football to me!! I love this game.

College Football 2013 – Recapping Week 13

What a weekend in the world of college football! We had blowouts ( see FSU, ‘Bama, South Carolina, Clemson ), upsets ( see Florida College Sports Newshumiliated by Georgia Southern ), hype and drama that didn’t unfold ( see Baylor vs. OK St and Missouri vs. Mississippi ), dreams shattered ( see Baylor and Oregon ), and more of the same ( the Duke express rolls along, Wisconsin nears another 10 win season, Les Miles wins again following a loss, and Fresno St. and Northern Illinois keep winning ). All the emotions and the roller coaster rides we took yesterday will pale in comparison to what is going to happen next week. Let’s wrap up Week 13 first.

The Luckeyes were one of the biggest winners yesterday when the Baylor hype machine never got their offense on track and got dumped by Pistol Pete and OK State. Had Baylor prevailed, they surely would have passed OSU in the BCS standings and sit there waiting for FSU or Alabama to fall. Ohio State must now get through the state of Meechigan ( vs. the Wolverines this week and then against Sparty in the Big 10 championship game ) if they have any hope of going to the BCS title game to get embarrassed by another SEC team.

Missouri went to Mississippi and played a rock solid game keeping their SEC East title hopes alive. All they have to do now is beat Texas A&M and they will get the winner of Alabama and Auburn in the SEC Championship game. Whoever wins the SEC championship will most likely play FSU for the BCS championship. The Tigers got a boost from QB James Franklin returning from an injury.

South Carolina and Clemson both crushed fellow in state schools, Coastal Carolina and The Citadel, setting up the “Palmetto State Championship” in Columbia. Seems like the old days….Spurrier hangs 70 on someone! The real USC goes for it’s fifth win in a row vs. their upstate rival. USC needs Johnny Football to go to the other Columbia ( Columbia, Missouri ) and knock them off so the Gamecocks can win the SEC East and play the winner of the Iron Bowl in the SEC championship game.

Let’s see….Oregon has gone from meeting ‘Bama for the BCS title to playing Ohio State in the Rose Bowl to playing somebody in some meaningless bowl game. OUCH!!

Les Miles was 22-1 after a loss. Make that 23-1 now as the Tigers contained Johnny Football all day long on a sloppy field in Baton Rouge. It has been a tough year for LSU and although they are ranked 16th, they can play with anyone in America.

And the Duke express rolls along! They are now 9-2 with only their hated rival UNC standing in their way to the ACC Championship game. It doesn’t matter if it’s football, basketball, baseball, women’s soccer, or lacross, these schools don’t like each other and always seem to be playing for a conference championship. What would happen if the Dookies beat UNC and then beat FSU in the ACC Championship game? Unthinkable!!

Arizona State – the best 2 loss team in the country? Only 2 losses came at Stanford and at Notre Dame. Hmmm……

By this time next Sunday, will we see a coach fired at Florida? After losing to Georgia Southern yesterday the Gators are in shambles. We know about all the injuries but you just can’t let a team like that beat you. Just ask Michigan. No disrespect to Southern but you are …Florida…multiple national championships…legendary coaches. Will Muschamp could have stayed at Texas – he was the coach in waiting – waiting for Mack Brown to retire. But instead, he took the Gator job and may now be on his way out the door. Here is a coaching scenario for you. TEAM X – Head Coach Bobby Petrino. Offensive Coordinator Lane Kiffin. Defensive Coordinator Will Muschamp!

Is anyone going to win the Heisman? No one, and I mean no one, has stepped up in the last few weeks to “win” the award. All have had the opportunity and all have failed when the lights have come on. Jameis Winston has played well versus the Little Sisters of the Poor but his off field problems may soon come to a head. Fresno State QB Derek Carr has really moved up the leader board. AJ McCarron can lock it up with a huge game if Alabama rolls Auburn. What about Boston College running back Andre Williams? All he has done this year is rush for over 2,000 yards! We are in a pass happy era and RB’s don’t get much love anymore.

#23 Notre Dame @ #7 Stanford

Minnesota @ #10 Michigan State

Oregon State @ #12 Oregon

Arizona @ #18 Arizona State

#22 UCLA @ #24 USC

#25 Duke @ UNC

What a schedule to wind down the college football regular season. Do you realize that everyone in the Top 10 ( with the exception of OK State – they have a bye ) has a chance of losing this week? Sure, many of them are playing each other and we could be in for one of the greatest weekends of college football…EVER!! The “what if” scenarios are mind boggling this week. A few weeks ago Oregon State @ Oregon was looking like a feature game. Not anymore! Just another rivalry game now. Jobs are at stake, a Heisman is on the line, and a suspension looming in the battle for state supremacy in Florida. Ohio State hasn’t played a meaningful road game this year and Michigan is awful. Sounds like an OSU blowout, right? Seriously, a Duke win over hated UNC and the Blue Devils win the ACC Coastal? Wake me up when this dream ends! Does Johnny Football have one more heroic game left in his career? The Gamecocks sure hope so! After his dismal performance yesterday against LSU, you have to believe A&M will bounce back. How will Missouri handle the pressure with the SEC East title on the line? Things will be CRAZY in Columbia, SC when the dreaded orange team from the north comes to town. Williams Brice Stadium will be electric as the Gamecocks go for another win against Clemson. Connor Shaw ( starting QB for USC ) has never lost a home game as the starter. And lastly, the Iron Bowl in Auburn as Alabama comes to town. This is why we play the games. Everything is on the line. A Heisman Trophy is at stake. The SEC West Championship is on the line. A trip to the BCS championship game hangs on the outcome. Gus Malzahn has been there before. Nick Saban is always there. Recruiting decisions await the outcome. State pride on the line. Gameday will be there. Love it or hate it, this is SEC football – the greatest conference in the world!

College Football 2013 – Recapping Week 11

For all of you SEC haters out there, it looks like you may have to wait a few more weeks in hope of #1 Alabama going down. The Tide rolled again over their nemisis LSU last night in convincing style moving them one step closer to another national championship. The college football world got rocked on Thursday night with Baylor ripping Oklahoma and Stanford handling Oregon. The tone was set for another big time upset but LSU turned the ball over at the Tide 2 yard line early in the game and once ‘Bama got the lead, they never looked back. As of right now, it looks like we are heading towards a BCS National Championship game between Alabama and FSU. And quite honestly, they are the 2 best teams. But, the Tide must get past Auburn ( OK, they do go to Mississippi State this week and then host Chattanooga ) and then team X ( this is where you would insert Missouri, South Carolina, or Georgia ) in the SEC championship game. Something to think about…..The last time Alabama played South Carolina – October 10, 2010 – the Gamecocks handled them 34-21. A championship game between Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban – WOW!! I am not saying South Carolina will win the east, but……

When ESPN airs the BCS Countdown show tonight at 8:30, does it really matter who is ranked 3, 4 ,5, or 6? Of course the Talking Heads will try to make it interesting and tell us that Stanford should be #2 or that Ohio State deserves to play in the title game, or a 2 loss SEC east winner should play for the BCS trophy. Alabama vs. FSU. Period. End of story. Let’s try and make some great bowl match ups instead. Oregon vs. Texas A&M – first team to 100 wins! Clemson vs Louisville in a battle of top QB’s fighting for NFL draft position. Stanford vs. Wisconsin in a battle of “big uglies”. Ohio State vs. Baylor, a clash of 2 teams thinking they deserve to be playing in the BCS title game. Fresno State vs. Northern Illinois, a battle of 2 unbeatens that no one cares about. South Carolina vs. Duke – Steve Spurrier now and then! Texas vs. Auburn – a matchup of 2 recent BCS Champions that fell on hard times and are now working their way back. LSU vs. Oklahoma – Big Game Bob vs. The Hat. Hey, we could have some fun with this…if only I was in charge!

The NCAA needs to go to Durham, NC and conduct an investigation. Duke is bowl eligible. Duke is 7-2. How can that happen? The Dookies are getting ready to host the ‘Canes this week in the biggest ACC game of the year! Wait a minute…I didn’t just say that, did I?? Congrats to Coach Cut and the entire Duke football family. Enjoy the ride!

Newsflash to every coach out there…You better have 2 top notch QB’s on your roster if you plan on going far. Just ask the Florida Gators. They open up 4-1, their QB breaks his leg, and they are now 4-5. South Carolina, Texas A&M, Missouri, and Ohio State have all leaned heavily on their backup QB’s and they have all delivered keeping them in the title hunt.

What has happened at Northwestern? They open with 4 straight wins, move up in the Top 25, and have now lost 5 in a row. How about Texas Tech? They start out 7-0 and have now lost 3 in a row.

A To Z Top 25:

  1. Alabama 9-0
  2. FSU 9-0
  3. Stanford 8-1
  4. Baylor 8-0
  5. Ohio State 9-0
  6. Oregon 8-1
  7. Clemson 8-1

  10. Oklahoma State 8-1
  11. Texas A&M 8-2
  12. South Carolina 7-2
  13. Fresno State 9-0
  14. Louisville 8-1
  15. Northern Illinois 9-0
  16. Michigan State 8-1
  17. Oklahoma 7-2
  18. UCLA 7-2
  19. LSU 7-3
  20. Wisconsin 7-2
  21. Miami 7-2
  22. UCF 7-1
  23. Arizona State 7-2
  24. Texas 7-2
  25. TIE  Duke 7-2  Nebraska 7-2

#1 Alabama @ Mississippi State

#3 Stanford @ USC

Texas Tech @ #4 Baylor

Utah @ #6 Oregon

Georgia Tech @ #7 Clemson

Georgia @ #9 Auburn

#10 Oklahoma State @ #24 Texas

Florida @ #12 South Carolina

#16 Michigan State @ #25 Nebraska

#21 Miami @ #25 Duke

What a HUGE week coming up! Georgia Tech usually gives Clemson a dog fight and it will be no different on Thursday night to start another week of madness. How will the Ducks bounce back from their loss to Stanford? Utah beat Stanford. Stanford beats Oregon. Utah ( fill in the blank ) Oregon. MONSTER game for the ACC Coastal Division as Miami, coming off 2 straight losses, travels to Duke. Auburn has total control over the SEC right now. Beat Georgia and they ( Georgia ) are eliminated from the SEC East race. Then, beat Alabama and they ( Auburn ) win the West. A South Carolina win over Florida moves them a step closer to winning the SEC East. They need either Mississippi or Texas A&M to beat Missouri for that to happen. A few weeks ago we would have said that Stanford would blow out USC. Since Lane was booted out of LA, the Trojans are playing inspired football and may give the Cardinal more than they wanted!

Time to kick back, turn on the NFL, and fall asleep!

It’s Saturday, It’s College Football, It’s Crazy!!

Week after week I tell you to hang on to your jock straps and let the season play out. 3 weeks ago your team may have been out of the BCS title game but as each week unfolds, you get closer and closer to the big game.

BCS Poll College FootballWho would have thought that about 3 weeks ago we would be talking about FSU and Baylor playing in the BCS National Championship game?

After Thursday nights games, anything can happen at this point. I have been saying for a month now that the title game was going to be played by ‘Bama and Oregon, that’s the matchup all of America wanted to see. Today, after Stanford once again showed the college world the blueprint for beating ( dismantling ) Oregon, we now have the title game that the Talking Heads have been suggesting for a few weeks – Alabama vs. FSU. Make no mistake, what Stanford did to Oregon was no accident. Imagine what a bigger, stronger, and faster Alabama team would have done to Oregon!

The Alabama – FSU game will be a better game. The Seminoles “look” more like an SEC team than the Ducks. But here is the reality – it may not happen after all!

FSU is pretty much a lock at this point to play in the BCS title game. With an Ohio State like schedule for the rest of the year ( Wake Forest, Syracuse, Idaho, Florida, and the ACC championship game vs. Miami or Va. Tech ), they surely won’t stumble against those cream puffs. Alabama on the other hand gets a huge test at home tonight against their nemesis LSU. Always expect the unexpected when you play Les Miles. When he is supposed to win, they falter. Give him no chance, and they play like world beaters. Tonight, they have no chance! So, you know what that means. After the Tide play the Tigers, they still have the #10 team in the country and hated rival Auburn to contend with. Then, if they can escape those 2 monster games, they have to contend with the SEC East winner in the SEC championship game!

The way this season is unfolding there is a very good chance that for the first time in like 54 years we won’t have an SEC team in the BCS championship game! All you SEC haters out there must love that possibility!

With Baylor dismantling Big Game Bob and Stanford taking Oregon to the wood shed on Thursday, the biggest loser of all of that was Ohio State. Before we start play in a few hours today, here are my Top 6 teams:

  1. college-footballAlabama
  2. FSU
  3. Stanford
  4. Baylor
  5. Ohio State
  6. Oregon

Your conference and who you play really takes on more significance as the season unfolds. After beating up #8 Oklahoma the other night, the Bears still have ranked teams Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, just on the outside and rising quickly Texas, and always tough TCU. As long as Baylor keeps winning they will stay ahead of OSU who has not played anyone and may only have #19 Michigan State left on their schedule. Truly, a one loss ‘Bama, a 1 loss Stanford, or a 1 loss FSU team is better than Ohio State. OSU fans, you may love your Buckeyes, but understand your team is not going anywhere until you start playing a national schedule….and winning those games! Don’t schedule Buffalo, Florida A&M, Cal, and San Diego State. How about Buffalo, Texas A&M, Va. Tech, and Arizona State ( as an example ) for your non-conference games? Win those games, dominate the Big 10, and you would be knocking on the door for the BCS National Championship game!

So, it’s almost game time. Lace up your shoes, get that cup in place ( beer cup that is ), put on your eye black, and crank up the volume on the big screen – Gameday is about to start and it’s time to settle in for another wild day of college football – the greatest game in the land!

College Football 2013 – Recapping Week 10

Week 10 was a setup week in college football, a prelude to what’s to come.

The big game of the day was to be Miami at FSU. The funny thing is that if it was such a “big game”, why was the spread 21 points?? That’s a blowout, not the feature game of the week! And, FSU did what they were supposed to do…blow out the ‘Canes.

I know that FSU has become the new media darling and everyone is now clamoring for Jameis Winston to win the Heisman, but, as Lee Corso so often says, “not so fast my friend”! Here is the reality. FSU has won the their division in the ACC. In the ACC College Football BCSchampionship game they will face the Hurricanes again. Can you say…Blowout…Again?? Especially since Miami lost their top RB for the year Duke Johnson last night. And by the way, FSU has Wake Forest, Syracuse, Idaho, and Florida left on their regular season schedule before their ACC championship game vs. The “U” again. That schedule is so…..Ohio State like!! They will not get any BCS love for that schedule down the stretch.

In the meantime, Oregon has to play Stanford, Utah, Arizona, and Oregon State before their PAC 10 championship game. As much as I hate the BCS, Oregon will get more love and if they go undefeated, they will face Alabama for the BCS title, period. What if we had a 4 team playoff for this year? #1 Alabama vs. #4 Ohio State and #2 Oregon vs. #3 FSU. ‘Bama routs the Buckeyes and Oregon beats FSU. Then Alabama meets Oregon for the BCS title. Any different than what we will have this year? The Tide will play the Ducks for the BCS title and OSU will play FSU in the Rose Bowl. But wait a minute…what if LSU beats Alabama? What if Auburn beats Alabama? What if Stanford beats Oregon? What if Michigan State beats Ohio State in the Big 10 championship game? What if South Carolina beats LSU in the SEC championship game? What if Baylor beats Oklahoma, Texas Tech, OK. State, TCU, and Texas? Does undefeated FSU play undefeated Baylor for the BCS championship? How can the SEC champion not play for the BCS crown? Too much time left, too many games left, and way too many scenarios left to be played out. How about we let the season unfold and enjoy the last few weeks of another unbelievable year in college football. If only the NFL was this exciting!

BCS Poll College FootballBoy, did the schedule makers really screw this week’s schedule up! For all of us couch potatoes out there, this Saturday could have been a college football junkies fantasy day. We should have had #8 Oklahoma @ #5 Baylor at noon. The 3:30 game should have been #2 Oregon @ #6 Stanford. And the 8:00 prime time game should have been #14 LSU @ #1 Alabama. But noooooo…..for some stupid reason we have the Sooners and Bears playing on THURSDAY night @7:30 and  Oregon and Stanford @ 9:00 also on Thursday. That is awful for what may be some the biggest games of the year. We are forced to choose between the 2 or go back and forth and the folks on the east coast probably can’t stay up and watch the finish of the PAC 10 game. Poor, poor scheduling for these critical games!

Maybe, just maybe, Ohio State may play 1 competitive game this year. After Sparty dismantled the Wolverines yesterday, State may get a chance to play the Luckeyes for the Big 10 championship. Michigan, now 6-2, could easily be 4-4 right now. Wait a minute…didn’t Coach Hoke say that there is more to college football than the SEC? Didn’t he say the Big 10 was on par with the SEC.  Newsflash to Coach Hoke ( Coach Charlie Strong please listen also ). Shut your mouth and play the games. You coach and let the fans shoot off their mouths! Asking – begging for respect always gets you trouble!

College Football UpdatesI thought Longhorn nation had fired Coach Mack Brown? OK, I said he should/would be fired also. All of a sudden, Texas, after a dismal 1-2 start, has ripped off 5 straight wins and is knocking on the Top 25 door. Maybe Mack has something left in him after all. Speaking of teams getting hot at the right time, how about those USC Trojans?

After Lane Kiffin was jerked off the plane and kicked to the curb, the Trojans have played well the last 2 weeks and may just salvage their season!

Another hot team right now is BYU. After inexplicably losing their opener against Virginia, they have now won 5 straight and with upcoming games with Wisconsin and Notre Dame, they could finish with a flurry and get a lot of national love! On the flip side, Va. Tech loses game 1 to ‘Bama and then rips off 6 straight wins. Hokie nation is getting the fever back and then they go bust by losing to the Dookies last week and then again losing yesterday to BC. Hokie fans everywhere have had their hearts ripped out this year.

#10 Auburn @ Tennessee

Virginia Tech @ #11 Miami

Mississippi State @ #13 Texas A&M

#20 UCLA @ Arizona

Kansas State @ #21 Texas Tech

BYU @ #22 Wisconsin

Nebraska @ Michigan

So far, this is the biggest week of the year in college football. The season/polls would be turned upside down if Alabama, Oregon, and Baylor were to lose. How does Miami bounce back after last nights blowout loss at FSU? The SEC east is wide open right now and a LSU win over ‘Bama really changes the west and then suddenly Auburn has control over the entire SEC. If they ( Auburn ) beat Georgia, Georgia is eliminated from the east. November 30 then becomes the biggest day of the year. Auburn goes to Alabama and Missouri hosts Texas A&M. WOW!! Hard to think that unranked Nebraska plays unranked Michigan this week. Keep an eye on BYU at Wisconsin….could be one of the best games of the week in a week filled with monster national implications!

Don’t you just love college football!!
