College Football 2015 – Recapping Week 6

Sports Analyst A To Z is back, bigger (well maybe 10 lbs. heavier) and better (more sarcastic) than ever for your reading pleasure! The 2015 College Football season has been a wild ride so far and it is only going to get crazier as we get deeper and deeper into the schedule and the “big boys” all have to play each other. On top of the play on the field, teams will start to panic and coaches will be fired before the year ends (see Maryland, the left coast USC, and Georgia or Tennessee).

Here is what we know so far. Ohio State is not as good as the experts thought. Sure, they are 6-0 and ranked #1 but the Luckeyes have not played like the top team in the land against their annual cream puff schedule. Michigan State continues to win but like OSU, they have not been impressive. Iowa, considered to have the worst schedule in America and picked to finish 6-6, is now 6-0. Maybe they will lose their last 6 games??? Meechigan, with new boss Jim Harbaugh, was thought to be a middle of the road Big 10 team. After 5 straight wins (3 shut outs in a row), they may be the best team in the Big 10! Weren’t the Florida Gators supposed to be rebuilding once again? Like the Maize and Blue, they too have a new sheriff in town (and a disciplinarian) and are now sitting at #11 in the A To Z weekly poll. Stanford, picked by many to be in the Final 4, stumbled in game 1 and were written off by all. After 4 impressive wins in a row they are now #10 and control their own destiny to reach the Final 4! Did anyone see that steamroller called Utah coming? They have a tough road ahead but are now a Final 4 candidate. Hey all you haters out there (that’s Notre Dame haters), what do you have to say now? You wrote them off several times after they sustained injury after injury and if it weren’t for a horrible play call on a 2 point conversion, the Golden Domers would be sitting around #5 right now waiting for a slip up ahead of them. BTW…if they run the table they WILL be in the Final 4! Some of the Talking Heads had LSU in the Final 4. They do have the Heisman Trophy winner and best player in the country (RB Leonard Fournette) but have a BRUTAL schedule ahead of them. Florida, Western Kentucky, Alabama, Arkansas, Texas A&M, and a potential trip to the SEC Championship game stand in their way to the Final 4. OUCH!!

This, That, and some more. Georgia RB and Heisman hopeful Nick Chubb went down yesterday with a knee injury at Tennessee. His season, like Georgia’s has ended. With upcoming games against Missouri and Florida, the Bulldogs are in danger of losing 4 games in a row! Let’s hope Nick can return healthy and turn out like his predecessor Todd Gurley! Hats off to Les Miles and the entire Tiger Nation for all the support they gave to the South Carolina Gamecocks over the last several days. With the flooding disaster in SC and the game being forced to move to Baton Rouge, Les and the school did everything to make USC’s trip to the Bayou as seamless as possible. In a cut throat business like college football, this was a tremendous show of class! Speaking of class, will someone show Duke a little respect? Coach Cut is one of the best in the business and he has quietly built a perennial winning  program in Durham over the last 3 years. Let’s see…you are Texas and have more money than any school in the world (except for ND). You hire a no nonsense coach and expect him to win on day one. He cleans house and starts to bring in his recruits. He loses early and often. You want him gone after 1 1/2 years. The solution? Bring in Big Game Bob and the mighty Sooners. The Longhorns roll the Sooners in the Red River Rivalry and all is well. What a Cinderella story! Hey 10 gallon hats and cowboy boots – leave the dude (Charlie Strong) alone for at least 2 more years. You can’t turn a football program around in 1 year. Wait a minute…SEE Michigan! Didn’t you used to be…Penn State, Virginia Tech, The “U”, Nebraska, and Tennessee? Oh how the mighty have fallen. Year after year, these were the college football heavyweights that dominated the Top 10.

We are truly in store for a monster weekend! Teams will be setting themselves up for conference championships and getting themselves in position for a birth in the Final 4. I truly believe we will have 8-10 teams with one loss when it is all said and done. The committee will then have tremendous pressure on them to select just 4. It’s all then going to boil down to conference champions and strength of schedule. Think about it – all of the current Top 25 teams except for Toledo and Houston, have to play each other at some point. It is going to be a gut wrenching final stretch of the season and that is why college football is the greatest game in the land!

College Football 2014-Rivalry Weekend Is Here!!!

We are just hours away from one of the biggest days of the year in college football – rivalry weekend and fans all across the country are wondering, which team is going to show up? The one that plays to win, or the one that plays NOT to lose? With so much at stake, one bad play call, one bad snap, one ill advised throw and your team slips out of the Final Four talk. College Football A to ZJust ask Marshall about the pressures of that last game. Undefeated going into yesterday’s game, they blew it. Nice season, thank you for playing! Just ask UCLA. The Talking Heads were jumping on their band wagon Tuesday night saying if they won out, they would deserve Final four consideration. Stanford 31 and UCLA 10. Thank you for playing and have a nice bowl payday! Maybe if QB Hundley had spent more time this week preparing for the big game instead of being on radio talk shows announcing he will turn pro, the Bruins may have played better. Can you say…3rd round pick – perennial back up in the NFL?

I’m pissed! Nebraska kicks a late FG and scores a TD in OT to beat Iowa. Another 4 loss season is now in jeopardy for the Cornshuckers. One can only hope they blow their bowl game…and finish with their 4th loss of the season for the 7th year in a row. Bo just may save his job after all! Speaking of jobs, the door is open for a new DC in Aggie land. Texas A&M Head Coach Kevin Sumlin fired his DC yesterday and you know who has ties to the state of Texas? If you said Will Muschamp you would be right! This will be one of many opportunities for him. Will today be the last game for Brady Hoke in Michigan? Ohio State needs to win 49-7 to remain in Final Four consideration and they should clobber the hated Wolverines, but this is rivalry weekend and you just never know!!! A freshman QB for OSU. His first time in that situation. OSU struggled last week versus a pitiful Indiana team. Speaking of Michigan, do you think they made a big mistake running Coach Rich Rod out of town now? He had been successful every stop along the way. Because he wasn’t a Michigan man ( what the hell is that supposed to mean ) they didn’t want him there. Now that he has built Arizona into a power ( they will play Oregon for the PAC 12 Championship ), do you think Meechigan made a mistake?  Hey Missouri – don’t forget to send South Carolina a Christmas card. If the Gamecock defense had shown up in the 4th quarters of their games with Missouri, Kentucky, and Tennessee, you would be thinking about which bowl game you would be playing in and not preparing for an ass whipping versus Alabama next week in the SEC Championship game! Didn’t think Missouri would go to Rocky Top and win. Didn’t think Missouri could beat a suddenly hot Arkansas team. Don’t think Missouri could beat ( fill in the blank here ) in the SEC Championship game.

So what is going to happen today? Now that Georgia has been eliminated for the SEC Championship game, will they show up versus Georgia Tech? I think so! Georgia wins 42-24. Can the Gamecocks beat Clemson for the sixth time in a row? Yup! Steve Superior has Yaba Daba Dabo’s number! Thee USC 48 and Clem-and-Son 20. Will the Irish go west and give up a half of a hundred? Probably. The other USC 51 and ND 35. Gotta put my Badger cap on. Minnesota can’t beat Ohio State. Wisconsin can, and will! Wisconsin beats the great story called Minnesota 30-17. The Luckeyes prevail over the Wolverines in Brady’s last game 38-13. And all of America is hoping the Florida Gator’s rally around Coach Muschamp one more time and upset the Semin-holes. Great “D” beats an average “O” 20-17. Gators win…Gators win…Gators win!!! Oregon clobbers Oregon State 48-13 setting up their PAC 12 Championship game versus Arizona. In the Egg Bowl, Mississippi State, now needing style points blasts arch rival Ole Miss 41-10. And then there is the Iron Bowl. A ‘Bama win and they are in the Final Four. An Auburn victory, and there is chaos in the world of college football! Nick can’t and won’t lose 2 in a row in this classic battle. The Tigers are struggling right now and the Tide rolls 27-17.

College Football 2014…Recapping Week 8…The Convicts Escape!

College Football Week 2

So often we have, on paper at least, great match ups between 2 powerful teams. The hype and build up during the week is almost non-stop and the game turns out to be a dud or a blowout.

Football QuoteThe potential was there once again as the Fighting Irish and Florida State Seminoles met for a #2 versus a #5 battle to see who stays in the playoff hunt and who may exit the race. It not only lived up the billing but exceeded it! No doubt, it is an ESPN Classic. Let’s be honest, you either LOVE ND or you HATE ND, there is no middle ground. I talked with so many ND haters this week and to a person, they were all pulling for the Irish. Everyone is so sick and tired of the garbage surrounding FSU’s QB situation. If you or I were accused of sexual misconduct, stealing crab legs, getting paid for autograph signings, or violating the schools conduct policy, we would be locked up and never see the light of day again! Apparently, not at FSU and especially if your name is Jameis Winston.

The Demise of the SEC?? Say it isn’t so – It Isn’t!!

Ok, I am already in a bad mood and the season hasn’t even started. After watching cut ins on ESPN, the Kick Off shows, the Talking Heads, and other BS non sense, it seems like all they want to talk about is the demise of the SEC. Are you freaking kidding me?? The best conference in America, lead by the best coaches, with the best athletes, the best recruiting classes, and the most NFL draft picks. The biggest and best stadiums with the best fans and the best tailgating. Let’s see…A night game in Baton Rouge ( that starts at 7 AM ) or a wine a cheese party in Chapel Hill? A November 25th game in Columbia, SC where it is sunny and 78 degrees, or freezing temperatures, snow, and slop in Happy Valley? The worlds greatest outdoor cocktail party between Florida and Georgia or sipping champagne…in Champaign, Illinois? A bunch of tree huggers in the Northwest or a bunch of screaming fools yelling pig-pig soooie with rifles in their hands. Well, I may have to rethink that one???College Football Kickoff

This is supposed to be the year when all the BSC crap is finally over. Replace the computers with humans and everything will be fixed. Well, we are not getting off to a good start. The SEC may be the most balanced league ever and because of that, they may have a 2 loss champion. All the so called experts want to see this. In that scenario, no one from the powerful SEC could have a team in the 4 team playoff. What a joke that would be.

College Football 2014 – Ranking The Conferences

Count down to College Football…….

2014 College FootballAs we are getting closer and closer to the best day of the year in all of sports, August 28, when the 2014 college football season kicks off in Columbia, South Carolina, I started thinking about the power conferences and how they stack up against each other. It’s easy to just rank the conferences, so I ranked the divisions as well as the conferences into one TOP 10 ranking. The SEC has ruled college football for the last, I don’t know, 7 to 30 years and there won’t be any change in that domination anytime soon. Oh sure, the PAC 12 has some formidable teams, the BIG 10 hopes to regain their past glory, the BIG 12 dreams of past Wishbone run dominating teams, and the ACC ( the Little Brother of the SEC ) thinks that 1 BCS National Championship will vault them past the SEC. Just one look at this years Top 10 ( depending on which publication you read ) and you will see 3 or 4 teams from the SEC in there. As everyone knows, getting through their brutal schedule as they beat each other up week after week, is tougher than winning the National Championship. Just look at Saban, I think he has won more National Championships than he has SEC titles! So, with all that said, let’s get to my TOP 10 rankings!
