Tavern on the Green Closing

Tavern on the Green, the famous restaurant located in Central Park on the Upper West Side of New York City announced that it will be closing it’s doors.

Before Tavern on the Green closing was announced, the restaurant earned $38 million from over 500,000 visitors in 2007.  That made Tavern on the Green the second highest grossing independently owned restaurant in the United States.

Tavern on the Green sale on Jan. 13 and 14 at the restaurant. It will be open to the public and a preview of the thousands of objects will be held from Jan. 6 to Jan. 14.

Everything from the Baccarat crystal chandeliers, the Japanese lanterns in the garden to the tablecloths and dinnerware will be sold, though Guernsey’s founder and president, Arlan Ettinger, declined to estimate what the items could fetch.

Tavern on the Green, which filed for bankruptcy protection in September after the city did not renew its license, is disbursing the proceeds of the auction to its creditors.  Read full story here

The restaurant’s name must be sold under the bankruptcy proceedings. However, in an interesting twist, the LeRoy family could end up purchasing the restaurant’s name in an auction.

Tavern on the Green closing is also a commentary on the financial picture for everyone in New York.  People just can’t afford the lifestyle anymore.

Once the sheepfold for the sheep, Tavern on the Green became a restaurant in the 1930s. Since then, the Tavern on the Green has become a famous New York institution and serves over half a million patrons a year. Tavern on the Green is also famous for its appearances in films such as Wall Street, Ghostbusters, Made, and The Out of Towners.

New York City Marathon

Tavern on the Green is the finish line of the New York Marathon . The Barilla Marathon Eve Dinner, a pre-race pasta party on the eve of the marathon for 10,000 guests (including registrants, who attend for free), takes place at the Tavern.
