Ohio State Wins College Football National Championship

Ohio State has won the first-ever College Football Playoff National Championship Game after  beating the Oregon Ducks  42-20 in Dallas on Monday.

Ohio State Coached by Urban Meyer Win College Football National ChampionshipOhio State began the first major college football playoff as the fourth and final seed.  They came into the game as a six-point underdogs. They were underdogs all year: first when starting quarterback Braxton Miller got hurt before the season, then after they got killed at home against Virginia Tech, again when second-string quarterback J.T. Barrett got hurt before the Big Ten Championship game, and especially against Alabama and Oregon with a third-string quarterback in the playoff.

They overcame all of those obstacles, improving as the season went along and peaking at the perfect moment.

Following Monday nights victory…Buckeyes head coach Urban Myer had this to say about the win.  “The chase is complete,”  He added  “It’s done. It’s over. They accepted their final mission, their final assignment and their final directive, and they did it. That was our whole mantra this last couple of weeks. A job well done, and we’re very grateful.”

College Football 2014-Recapping Week 13…Taking Care Of Business!

Week 13 College Football was all about “taking care of business.”

College Football A to ZAll of the top teams did what they were supposed to do in week 13 – take care of business and get ready for the upcoming wild finish to a fabulous year of college football. I said last week that this was chalk week – all the top teams would win and there wouldn’t be any movement in the Top 10. Well, we had a few scares as FSU had to kick a late FG to beat BC and Ohio State had to rally in the 4th quarter to beat hapless Indiana. Other than those 2 close calls, everyone else put away the Little Sisters of the Poor setting the stage for the biggest weekend in college football – RIVALRY WEEKEND.

College Football 2014-Recapping Week 12…The Convicts Escape…Again!

Ok, I am going to admit it, I am no different than anyone else outside of the penitentiary called FSU. I am rooting for anyone that plays FSU. That is what the 2014 College Football season has become. Everyone, and I mean everyone outside of Tallahassee, wants FSU to go down. I truly think that the college football playoff committee is hoping for an FSU loss to once and for all, get them out of the picture. We are sick and tired of the  accusations, lack of discipline, out of control behavior, and total disregard of the law that is allowed to go on down there. Not only is FSU undefeated on the field, they are undefeated in the court room…7-0. 7 arrests and 0 convictions! Talk about turning a blind eye to the law! This is a win at all cost program and Jimbo has lost all respect and credibility. The Winston case got conveniently postponed until after the season – not enough time for his lawyer to prepare his case. It’s only been 2 years! And the latest debacle involving a hit and run accident that is being swept under the table. Hey Barney, did you see anything? Nope, good, let’s go get some doughnuts and coffee! Good luck this weekend kids, we gotta beat dem boys down in Miami!

Let’s get out of the courtroom and back on to the playing field where we belong. Yesterday was just a normal day in the world of college football. Upsets, OT games, last second field goals, poor use of time management, miraculous comebacks, dropped interceptions that lead to eventual scores, bad officiating, and unbelievable performances. One of the big questions for me yesterday was, how where some of the previous week’s big winners going to respond? Would Ohio State have a hangover from beating Michigan State? Would TCU have a hangover from beating Kansas State? How about Arizona State and their thrashing of ND? Answers please, OSU escapes at Minnesota by winning 31-24, TCU comes back to edge lowly Kansas 34-30, and Arizona goes to Oregon State and losses 35-27. How about lowly Northwestern going to ND ( ND stands for NO DEFENSE ) and upsetting the Irish 43-40 in OT? How about ( predictable ) Clemson going to Hotlanta and laying an egg versus Georgia Tech? I think Clemson had to finish with their third string water boy as the QB with hard luck Watson going down with a knee injury and Stoudt throwing more pic 6’s that completions! And poor Duke losing at home to Virginia Tech 17-16! Coach C sure could have used some of Coach K’s offense! Has Auburn quit or is Georgia that good? The Bulldogs smashed the Tigers 34-7 in Todd Gurley’s return. Stay tuned…Gurley hurt his knee. Of course, the game of the day was #1 Mississippi State going to ‘Bama. The Tide flexed their muscle and beat the Bulldogs 25-20. Jack, I mean Zack, I mean Dak Prescott had 3 pics in ‘Bama territory – OUCH! Just when the Talking Heads said there may not be a team from the SEC in the Final Four, if ‘Bama wins out and Mississippi State wins out, we may get 2 SEC teams in!!!

College Football 2013 – Recapping Week 15

BCS National ChampionshipIt was another electric weekend in the world of college football as all of the major conferences held their championships.

Sadly, this means the end of the year of another terrific season. Sure, we have the Army-Navy game, all the bowls, and the BCS National Championship game left, but the week to week drama is now over. And what a way to end the year! The BCS, in it’s 16th and final year, put most of us on life support right to the end. Going into championship weekend you still had the scenario of Northern Illinois getting a BCS bid. A big sigh of relief went up when Bowling Green came in and spanked them. Then, all we heard all week was whether or not a one loss SEC team should jump an undefeated Ohio State team. No disrespect to FSU and OSU, but that BCS potential national championship game would have represented all that is wrong with the BCS system.

Two undefeated teams with the worst schedules in college football playing for the biggest prize. Their formula was to play no one out of conference and play in weak conferences. FSU ( Pitt, Bethune-Cookman, Nevada, Idaho ) only had 1 marquee game all year and they humiliated Clemson. OSU ( Buffalo, Cal, San Diego St., Florida A&M ) only had to navigate through a poor Big 10 schedule and barely escaped in a few of those wins ( Illinois and Meechigan ). Even though they both played pathetic schedules, the biggest difference was that FSU put 35 points on you before the fans had a chance to take their seats and OSU let other teams hang around and stay in the game. A BCS title game with FSU and OSU may have been the least watched championship game in history! The ACC versus the Big 10 for all of the marbles. The bottom 2 conferences out of the big 5. Thankfully Michigan State came through and saved the world by beating the Luckeyes.

Like the Boston Red Sox in baseball this year, Auburn may be college football’s team of destiny. As the Auburn Tigers ran wild over a vaunted Missouri defense, they knew they had to win and win big if there was even a glimmer of hope of passing the Buckeyes in the final poll. After  taking care of business, they sat back sipping on some sweet southern ice tea and became the biggest Michigan State fans in the country. If Sparty could take care of business, Auburn was back in the title game. What would the BCS National Championship game be without a team from the SEC?? The mighty SEC had won 7 BCS championships in a row and on Saturday at 4 PM, things weren’t looking too promising for the best conference in America. Then, Auburn puts away a solid Missouri team. Now, all the Tigers needed was a Spartan victory over OSU and the SEC was back in business.  Michigan State’s big 2 ( Connor Cook and Jeremy Langford ) out played Ohio State’s big 2 ( Braxton Miller and Carlos Hyde ) and guess what America…..the SEC is back!! Seriously, these are probably the best 2 teams right now and as much as I hate the BCS system, it did play out to give us the best match up possible. The 4 team playoff format will help next year but it is not the end all answer – good starting point though.

There were other great games yesterday as well. Oklahoma’s dramatic fourth quarter was one of the best “Bedlam” games ever as they spoiled OK State’s bid for a conference championship. How about Stanford’s dominance over ASU? Arizona State was one of the hottest teams in the country and the experts picked them to win. Stanford took control early and never took their foot off of the gas as they won convincingly and earned a birth in the Rose Bowl against….Michigan State. What a throw back game that will be! As I mentioned earlier, Northern Illinois helped out the BCS on Friday by losing their conference championship to Bowling Green. Baylor wraps up the Big 12 by thrashing Mack Brown and the Texas Longhorns and earns a Fiesta Bowl bid to play UCF. Ok, so everyone in America said FSU would win by 30 over Duke. You have to give Duke all the credit in the world for making it that far. A basketball school that wins in football too. Great story, great job by everyone associated with the program. Guess it just may say something about the ACC…just saying!

A few more notes from the Big 10 championship game. States win ended the Buckeyes and Coach Urban Meyer’s 24 game winning streak. In a way, is was a weird game. State goes up by 17, OSU rallies with 24 unanswered points, and then Sparty scores 17 straight. Michigan State ends the year by beating everyone in the Big 10 by 10 points or more.

Why did HC Chris Peterson of Boise State leave to take the Washington job? Year after year, I have him as one of the top 5 coaches in the country. What would he do in Texas…LSU…Southern Cal? Sarkesian  to Southern Cal was OK, he knows the program and the area but Peterson would take them to the next level! Jimbo Fisher and Kevin Sumlin received new deals to stay at FSU and Texas A&M. Biggest question left is whether or not Mack Brown can or will stay at Texas. Why hasn’t Georgia fan called for the ouster of Mark Richt yet? Seems like they do that every year, usually after his first loss and they lost 4 games this year.

WEEK 15 Top 25:

  1. FSU 13-0
  2. Auburn 12-1
  3. Alabama 11-1
  4. Stanford 11-2
  5. South Carolina 10-2
  6. Michigan State 12-1
  7. Ohio State 12-1
  8. Missouri 11-2
  9. Baylor 11-1
  10. Oregon 10-2
  11. Clemson 10-2
  12. Oklahoma 10-2
  13. LSU 9-3
  14. Oklahoma State 10-2
  15. Arizona State 10-3
  16. UCF 11-1
  17. Louisville 11-1
  18. Fresno State 11-1
  19. Northern Illinois 11-1
  20. UCLA 9-3
  21. Wisconsin 9-3
  22. Duke 10-3
  23. Notre Dame 8-4
  24. Bowling Green 10-3
  25. Texas A&M 8-4 TIE Georgia 8-4

So, what is left for us to debate? Tonight at 8:30 we get to see everything unfold on the BCS Countdown Show followed by the Bowl Selection Show. The major bowls are all set. You have FSU and Auburn playing for the BCS title, Michigan State vs. Stanford in the Rose Bowl, Alabama vs. Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl, Clemson vs. Ohio State in the Orange Bowl, and Baylor vs. UCF in the Fiesta Bowl. Hopefully, and I do mean hopefully, there will be some other good matchups put together. I love Notre Dame but ND playing Rutgers in Yankee Stadium is blah, blah, blah! The biggest loser in all this will be South Carolina. Ranked #5 and teams below them getting bigger payoffs, better games!! Here would be some good pairings. South Carolina vs. Oklahoma State. Oregon vs. Missouri. LSU vs. Arizona State. Louisville vs. UCLA. Wisconsin vs. Georgia. Texas A&M vs. Fresno State. Duke vs. Northern Illinois.  If only they would put me in charge…I could fix this mess in 2 hours!!

College Football 2013 – Recapping Week 10

Week 10 was a setup week in college football, a prelude to what’s to come.

The big game of the day was to be Miami at FSU. The funny thing is that if it was such a “big game”, why was the spread 21 points?? That’s a blowout, not the feature game of the week! And, FSU did what they were supposed to do…blow out the ‘Canes.

I know that FSU has become the new media darling and everyone is now clamoring for Jameis Winston to win the Heisman, but, as Lee Corso so often says, “not so fast my friend”! Here is the reality. FSU has won the their division in the ACC. In the ACC College Football BCSchampionship game they will face the Hurricanes again. Can you say…Blowout…Again?? Especially since Miami lost their top RB for the year Duke Johnson last night. And by the way, FSU has Wake Forest, Syracuse, Idaho, and Florida left on their regular season schedule before their ACC championship game vs. The “U” again. That schedule is so…..Ohio State like!! They will not get any BCS love for that schedule down the stretch.

In the meantime, Oregon has to play Stanford, Utah, Arizona, and Oregon State before their PAC 10 championship game. As much as I hate the BCS, Oregon will get more love and if they go undefeated, they will face Alabama for the BCS title, period. What if we had a 4 team playoff for this year? #1 Alabama vs. #4 Ohio State and #2 Oregon vs. #3 FSU. ‘Bama routs the Buckeyes and Oregon beats FSU. Then Alabama meets Oregon for the BCS title. Any different than what we will have this year? The Tide will play the Ducks for the BCS title and OSU will play FSU in the Rose Bowl. But wait a minute…what if LSU beats Alabama? What if Auburn beats Alabama? What if Stanford beats Oregon? What if Michigan State beats Ohio State in the Big 10 championship game? What if South Carolina beats LSU in the SEC championship game? What if Baylor beats Oklahoma, Texas Tech, OK. State, TCU, and Texas? Does undefeated FSU play undefeated Baylor for the BCS championship? How can the SEC champion not play for the BCS crown? Too much time left, too many games left, and way too many scenarios left to be played out. How about we let the season unfold and enjoy the last few weeks of another unbelievable year in college football. If only the NFL was this exciting!

BCS Poll College FootballBoy, did the schedule makers really screw this week’s schedule up! For all of us couch potatoes out there, this Saturday could have been a college football junkies fantasy day. We should have had #8 Oklahoma @ #5 Baylor at noon. The 3:30 game should have been #2 Oregon @ #6 Stanford. And the 8:00 prime time game should have been #14 LSU @ #1 Alabama. But noooooo…..for some stupid reason we have the Sooners and Bears playing on THURSDAY night @7:30 and  Oregon and Stanford @ 9:00 also on Thursday. That is awful for what may be some the biggest games of the year. We are forced to choose between the 2 or go back and forth and the folks on the east coast probably can’t stay up and watch the finish of the PAC 10 game. Poor, poor scheduling for these critical games!

Maybe, just maybe, Ohio State may play 1 competitive game this year. After Sparty dismantled the Wolverines yesterday, State may get a chance to play the Luckeyes for the Big 10 championship. Michigan, now 6-2, could easily be 4-4 right now. Wait a minute…didn’t Coach Hoke say that there is more to college football than the SEC? Didn’t he say the Big 10 was on par with the SEC.  Newsflash to Coach Hoke ( Coach Charlie Strong please listen also ). Shut your mouth and play the games. You coach and let the fans shoot off their mouths! Asking – begging for respect always gets you trouble!

College Football UpdatesI thought Longhorn nation had fired Coach Mack Brown? OK, I said he should/would be fired also. All of a sudden, Texas, after a dismal 1-2 start, has ripped off 5 straight wins and is knocking on the Top 25 door. Maybe Mack has something left in him after all. Speaking of teams getting hot at the right time, how about those USC Trojans?

After Lane Kiffin was jerked off the plane and kicked to the curb, the Trojans have played well the last 2 weeks and may just salvage their season!

Another hot team right now is BYU. After inexplicably losing their opener against Virginia, they have now won 5 straight and with upcoming games with Wisconsin and Notre Dame, they could finish with a flurry and get a lot of national love! On the flip side, Va. Tech loses game 1 to ‘Bama and then rips off 6 straight wins. Hokie nation is getting the fever back and then they go bust by losing to the Dookies last week and then again losing yesterday to BC. Hokie fans everywhere have had their hearts ripped out this year.

A To Z Top 25

  1. Alabama 8-0
  2. Oregon 8-0
  3. FSU 8-0
  4. Ohio State 9-0
  5. Baylor 7-0

  9. Missouri 8-1
  10. Auburn 8-1
  11. Miami 7-1
  12. Oklahoma State 7-1
  13. Texas A&M 7-2
  14. LSU 7-2

  21. Texas Tech 7-2
  22. Wisconsin 6-2
  23. UCF 6-1
  24. Notre Dame 7-2
  25. Arizona State 6-2

#14 LSU @ #1 Alabama

#2 Oregon @ #6 Stanford

#8 Oklahoma @ #5 Baylor

#10 Auburn @ Tennessee

Virginia Tech @ #11 Miami

Mississippi State @ #13 Texas A&M

#20 UCLA @ Arizona

Kansas State @ #21 Texas Tech

BYU @ #22 Wisconsin

Nebraska @ Michigan

So far, this is the biggest week of the year in college football. The season/polls would be turned upside down if Alabama, Oregon, and Baylor were to lose. How does Miami bounce back after last nights blowout loss at FSU? The SEC east is wide open right now and a LSU win over ‘Bama really changes the west and then suddenly Auburn has control over the entire SEC. If they ( Auburn ) beat Georgia, Georgia is eliminated from the east. November 30 then becomes the biggest day of the year. Auburn goes to Alabama and Missouri hosts Texas A&M. WOW!! Hard to think that unranked Nebraska plays unranked Michigan this week. Keep an eye on BYU at Wisconsin….could be one of the best games of the week in a week filled with monster national implications!

Don’t you just love college football!!
