Updated – Donovan McNabb Benched Players are Furious!  Do you blame them?

The ongoing soap opera in Washington took another twist on Friday as the Redskins announced that their $40 million quarterback, Donovan McNabb, will be benched for Sunday’s game in favor of Rex Grossman.

Six time Pro Bowler,Donovan McNabb, 44, was initally moved to second-string. Then to third-string.  So what’s next?  Then no guarantee that he’ll be back next season.

It was just eight months ago that McNabb was hailed as the team’s savior following a trade from Philadelphia and only 32 days since he signed that massive contract extension to stay in Washington.

Team mates are livid!  What is Mike Shanahan thinking?

Friday  coach Mike Shanahan announced Rex Grossman as his starter for the rest of the season, beginning with Sunday’s game at Dallas.

started one game in the past three seasons and a 29-year old who has thrown one touchdown pass in his NFL career.

McNabb will be the No. 2 quarterback against the Cowboys, then drop to No. 3 behind Grossman and John Beck for the final two games of the season.

And after that?

“I also told him,” Shanahan said, “that I cannot guarantee him that he will be back next year.”

The Redskins acquired McNabb in an April trade – the quarterback who would do for Shanahan in Washington what Elway did for him in Denver – is benched in a season in which he has been woefully inconsistent, throwing a career-high 15 interceptions and ranking 25th in the NFL with a 77.1 rating.

Michael Vick’s rise no surprise to Andy Reid

When Andy Reid traded Donovan McNabb to an intra-division rival, he only did so because he had a good backup plan—Kevin Kolb.

As it turned out, the backup—Vick—to his backup plan was actually better.

Regardless of who leads the Eagles offense, Reid is going to do whatever he can to make that trade not seem like a mistake.

Return Of Michael Vick

As of late, McNabb (and Mike Shanahan) are helping to make the trade look like a good idea.

Still, considering how important the position is to Reid’s offense, the Eagles quarterback needs to be very productive.

Reid won’t be satisfied unless Vick plays as good or better than McNabb did from 2000 to 2009. He will put Vick in situations to be successful. Over time, that could help Vick become one of the league’s best quarterbacks during the next five-plus seasons.

Donovan McNabb Archive

At the center of this evening’s Monday Night Football contest between the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles will be quarterback Donovan McNabb. Fresh off a 5-year extension that will reportedly pay him $40 million guaranteed and could be worth $88 million if all the incentives are reached, McNabb’s name is now in the spotlight once again. As if playing his former team and the memory of his benching by Redskins coach Mike Shanahan aren’t enough McNabb will now have the additional pressure of trying to dispel the idea that he’s a quarterback in decline.

Statistically, 2010 has arguably been McNabb’s worst season as a full-time starter. His numbers are down across the board, including completion percentage, passer rating, interception rate and touchdown rate. Despite these indicators, the Redskins have opted to extend him for several seasons beyond 2010 for a significant amount of guaranteed money.

Redskins Park: Mike Shanahan and Donovan McNabb

On if Donovan McNabb will be starting on Sunday:

“I don’t go through the starting lineups. I’ve told you guys that before. We talk about it every week. Sooner or later, you’ll come to the game and find out who’s starting.”

On sometimes dismissing speculation about who is starting:
“I like people getting prepared for a lot of different people. Even though they say it’s a meaningless game, it’s not meaningless to us. We’ve got a big game. We’ll get a lot of preparation. You guys will have to show up to view all of the starters.”

On not being willing to say that McNabb will be starting:
“I’m not committing to you who the starters are at any position on the football team.”

On if he feels that not committing to McNabb starting opens the door to lack of confidence for McNabb:

“No, it doesn’t. It gets people ready for our game and they’ve got to get ready for two, three players for the game. That’s good for us.”

Donovan McNabb About Michael Vick How and Why it Happened

Monday, August 17th, 2009

’ve been asked, and before it’s all over I’ll probably be asked again, what was my involvement in Michael Vick coming to the Eagles. Here’s what I know:

Michael and I have known each other since the time I was asked to host him on his visit to Syracuse University. Anybody that’s ever been through that knows that current college athletes are asked to spend time with possible recruits who are similar or share something in common (play the same position, come from the same part of the country, etc.). During that time, I had a chance to get to know Michael pretty well. And, although he decided to go to Virginia Tech, we kept in touch and remained friends.
