68 To 1….The Madness Begins !

68 To 1 ….. The Madness Begins !

The brackets are set and believe it or not, there is not that much bickering amongst the talking heads. I can’t get jacked up about whether Iona is in and Drexel is out. It’s hard to differentiate between BYU or Washington, so let’s lace ’em up and get after it on Tuesday night!

Anybody but Kentucky….sorry! I am not a John Calipari fan – I used to like the ‘Cats until he took over the program. It seems like NCAA trouble follows him, so when does the NCAA start knocking on doors in Lexington? How will the Commonwealth react in a few years when they are on probation, scholarships are cut, and lost T.V. revenue hits their beloved program? Coach Cal will walk away scot free and sign a $5,000,000 a year contract to coach in the NBA – no skin off his butt! What is Kentucky’s graduation rate under Calipari? Hmmm….. and he said on national T.V. how much he hates the “one and done” player.

Not that I am an FSU fan, but how good would it be to see a senior laden team go deep in the tournament? In a down year in the ACC, FSU has elavated itself into the top tier of the league lead by its core group of 6 seniors. Blowing out UNC and beating Duke has given Coach Hamilton and the Seminoles program national legitimacy. Now, beating Duke and UNC on consectutive days to win the ACC championship, this team is riding on a wave of momentum going into the Big Dance.

To me, I don’t like losing going into March Madness, especially if you are a top ranked team. Kentucky, Syracuse, UNC, and Kansas all enter the tournament banged up or bruised mentally. This has to be one of Roy Williams worse coaching performances ever. The Heels are the most talented team in the country but play listless and without an identity at times. On the flip side, the Jayhawks overacheived this year. Bill Selfs ballers weren’t supposed to be a Final 4 contender this year but played great team ball all year. Syracuse doesn’t rebound very well and a tough physical team with a good inside presence will give them fits. And then there are all the freshmen from Kentucky. Did they show their age and immaturity today against Vandy? Did they buckle under the pressure? Did they play like the inexperienced freshmen that they truly are? Can Coach Cal match X’s and O’s with the giants in the business at crunch time?

Wasn’t it great to see how happy and proud Bobby Knight was after his son Pat lead Lamar to the Big Dance? He said it was one of his happiest moments in his 50 + years around the college game. Bobby Knight and Brent Musberger make a great announcing team and I think Brent brings out a different side to Coach Knight that we aren’t used to seeing.

Would it be “Smart” for the Illini to pursue “Shaka”? With Bruce Webber getting canned, Illinois needs to make a big move with their next hire or they will remain in the middle of the pack in the Big Ten. Shaka Smart from VCU – you remember him from last years Final 4 – is one of the hot coaches right now. He seems entrenched at VCU right now but $3.5 million dollars may make the change easier!

Who is hot going into the tournament? Louisville, Memphis, Vanderbilt ( you know – the SEC champions ), FSU, Missouri, and Michigan State.

Hey….. Didn’t you used to be….UCLA??

News to Baylor. If you want your program to be taken seriously, get rid of those neon green / lime uniforms!! You ain’t Oregon!!

Monday will be one of the least productive days in the business world as brackets will be filled out, office pools will be put together, and people will be talking Sweet 16, Elite 8, and Final 4 all day long! What a great time of the year!

Cuonzo Martin

Cuonzo Martin  Named University of  Tennessee Head  Basketball Coach!

The University of Tennessee has a new has a new men’s head basketball coach.  Cuonzo Martin will fill the shoes of former head coach Bruce Pearl who was released last week following  Tennessee’s  embarrassing upset against Michigan in the first round of  the road to the final four.    Pearl was dismissed following a NCAA investigation and cited on numerous ethical violations.  The loss to Michigan did not determine Pearls future with the Volunteers.

Martin, 39, has coached at Missouri State for the past three years.  He attended Purdue University from 1991-1995  and played forward/guard under the leadership  of head coach Gene Keady.   In 1994 and 1995, Martin and his teammates won Big Ten Conference titles.  He would later find himself once again on the Purdue court side as an assistant coach under Keady.

In March of 2008, after eight years with Purdue, he accepted the head coaching position with Missouri State University.

In June 2010, Missouri State extended Martins contract with  a $300,000 overall package.  His contract details with the Volunteers is said to be $1.3 million per year for seasons.  Quite a hefty increase!  However, as a result of  Martin taking the job with Tennessee he will have to pay Missouri State $250.000.

In March of 2011 Martin was named MVC Coach of  the Year.

Despite possible implications the University may face as a result of  former head coach Bruce Pearl’s violations…Athletic Mike Hamilton assured Martin that the NCAA issues will work out.

In 1995, Martin was drafted in to the NBA in the 2nd round as the 57th pick by the Atlanta Hawks.  He also played for the Vancouver Grizzlies and the Milwaukee Bucks.

Martin was formerly introduced as the Volunteers head basketball coach today.

Bracket March Madness

Who needs the NFL when our weekends are filled with March Madness! I don’t know about you, but billionaires fighting with millionaires doesn’t hold my interest when the Jimmer is raining three’s, the best player in college ( Kyrie Irving ) is back on the court, an unknown ( VCU ) has destroyed most brackets, and the best conference in America ( The Big East ) has bounced each other out of the tourney.

Bruce Pearl Fired

The University of Tennessee has fired Head Basketball Coach Bruce Pearl.  Mike Hamilton the school Athletic Director met with Pearl today was told he was fired as a result of numerous NCAA violations.  We personally think that Mike Hamilton should be fired for hiring  Lane Kiffin!

Shortly after news broke Pearl, 51,  posted this message on Facebook  “As many of you know, I have been fired as head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers. This really does note come as a surprise to me, but my emotions are getting the best of me. This is perhaps the saddest day in my life. I loved everything about Tennessee, Knoxville, and the Volunteers. These were the best years of my life!”

The NCAA found 10 violations that Pearl had committed.  Mike Hamilton sparked controversy when he announced that Pearl’s fate would be determined after the NCAA  March Madness Tournament.  Many felt that to make a remark like that before they were to  faced Michigan was really bad timing  and felt that it would impact the game.  Michigan embarrassed the Vols beating them by 30 points.

Final Score…Tennessee 45, Michigan 75.

College Hoops and Notes

Earlier in the season Pearl was suspended for the first eight games and had to forfeit $1.5 million.  He has been working without a contract the entire season.   Despite the violations Pearl is a fantastic coach so the Vol’s may regret this one.  He has coached college basketball for 19 years…Pearl has publically accepted full responsibility for his actions and blames no one but himself.

College Hoops and Notes

As the football bowl season is upon us, lets not forget that basketball is now in full swing. Done are the made for TV tournaments, conference challenges, and tune up games against directional schools ( like NW East Missouri St. vs. Kentucky ).

Coach K reached another milestone tonight surpassing the legendary UNC coach, Dean Smith, for number 2 on the most career wins. Even with the best freshman ( Kyrie Irving ) in the country out indefinitely with an injury, the Duke express rolls on. Bobby Knights 902 total wins may get eclipsed by Coach K  this year if Duke can win it all again.
The Big East may be the best conference in America. In a battle of top 15 teams tonight, Notre Dame blew out Georgetown. Also in the top 15 are Syracuse and UCONN ( the men’s team ). By years end, you will see Pittsburg and Louisville in the top 20 also. Huggy Bear will will have his Mountaineers up there also. Talk about a battle every night!!
Speaking of West Virginia, has anyone seen a familiar name on their roster? Does Jonnie West’s name bring back any memories? He is the son of the great Jerry West.
Finally, I look forward to watching the games on ESPN that are covered by Dick Vitale. A lot of people don’t like him or are tired of his rants. Nobody has more passion for what they do than Dick. Have you ever seen a person with more energy ? His love for the game, love for the kids, and support for the coaching fraternity, makes him the sports giant that he truly is. ESPN does a lot of great things and a few not so good projects, but the Saturday Game Day broadcasts for both football and basketball are what fans like myself enjoy the most. Think about it….Dick Vitale, Bobby Knight, and Digger Phelps.

Bruce Pearl Suspended

As a result of recruiting violations Bruce Pearl has been suspended for the first eight games.

Bruce Pearl Suspended

The SEC has announced that Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl will be suspended for this season’s first eight league games as punishment for admitted NCAA rules violations, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com on Friday.

An attempt to reach Pearl for comment wasn’t immediately successful.

Pearl’s future has been uncertain since athletic director Mike Hamilton held a press conference in September to tell reporters that the school’s men’s basketball program is being investigated by the NCAA.

Pearl has since confirmed a CBSSports.com report that detailed how he illegally hosted recruits at his house in 2008 and subsequently misled investigators about it. His contract has been voided, but he’s expected to sign a new agreement with Tennessee in the coming months, if not weeks. The school will likely get a notice of allegations from the NCAA sometime in 2011.  Read full story and more here
