The 2014 Kentucky Derby is the 140th renewal of The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports.
UPDATE: California Chrome with jockey Victor Espinoza on board finished the 1 1/4 mile sprint in 2:03.66 and 1 3/4 lengths ahead of pack to win the 2014 running of the “Run for the Roses.”
The 140th running of the $2 million guaranteed Kentucky Derby aka “Run for the Roses” Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I) will be run Saturday, May 3, 2014, and for the second consecutive year, a tiered point system in select races will determine who qualifies to America’s greatest race.
Barbaro was an American thoroughbred racehorse who decisively won the 2006 Kentucky Derby, but shattered his leg two weeks later in the 2006 Preakness Stakes, ending his racing career and eventually leading to his death.
The video was made in August 2006, when things were looking up for him. Barbaro recovered from his shattered right hind leg suffered in the 2006 Preakness, he spent a very happy and content 8 + months recoverring at New Bolton Center. Barbaro was ultimately euthanized on Jan 29 – 2007 due to Laminitis. He was a champion and the world loved him deeply. His passing shattered the hearts of everyone who knew his story. His fighting spirit lives on and through Barbaro many people have come to love horses and make the world a better place for them. Barbaro’s fans are his greatest legacy.
