College Football Playoffs – Week 1 Rankings

The anticipation has been building since Saturday’s games ended for the first College Football Poll rankings of the College Football A to Zyear.

Who would be left out? Who would be screwed? Who is on the outside looking in? The reality is that this is just week one. Last year, if you remember, when the first ranking came out we had Mississippi State, Auburn, FSU, and Ole Miss as the top 4. How did that work out? Not too good! Only FSU made the Final 4 from that group and the eventual champion, Ohio State, was initially ranked 14th!

Want to know what the best part of ESPN’s initial ranking was? It was that we did not have to listen to Danny Kanell and Heather Dinich! Those two piss me off like no other talking heads. Who made them the voice of college football? I enjoy Reece Davis, Homer Galloway, Homer Pollack, and sometimes Homer Herbstreit. Throw in Homer Finebaum and you have a solid crew!

All sarcasm aside, the committee did a good job. This week’s ranking set the stage for the insanity that will happen over the next 5 weeks. Most of the top teams will all have to play each other and the top 4 will change every week until the Final 4 match ups are finally set after conference championship Saturday. You want chalk? Clemson runs the table and finishes #1. LSU runs the table and finishes #2. Ohio State wins out and finishes #3. Notre Dame beats Pitt, BC, Wake, and Stanford to finish in the 4th spot. How ironic would that be? A Clemson vs. ND rematch and LSU vs. OSU. Pretty sweet Final 4! You want chaos? FSU beats Clemson, ‘Bama beats LSU but loses to Florida in the SEC championship game, Baylor beats TCU, Oklahoma beats Baylor, Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State, Michigan beats Ohio State, Ohio State beats Michigan State, Ohio State beats Iowa, Temple beats Houston, and Temple beats Memphis. If all those scenarios happened, we could have 17 one loss teams – what a nightmare!!! You want reality? Clemson has the easiest path and if they get by FSU on Saturday, they are a Final 4 lock. If LSU gets by ‘Bama, they still have a long way to go but could make it. If ND can run the table and beat Stanford in the season finale, they will be in. I really think Ohio State will get tripped up leaving the door open for either Michigan State or Oklahoma. The Sooners are hot right now but I just don’t trust “Big Game Bob” anymore.
