College Football Week 1…The Mayhem Begins!

We’ve been waiting since January and the 2014 College Football season has finally arrived. And what a start to a new season it was! We saw in week 1 contenders, pretenders, Heisman performances, blowouts, nail biters, poor calls, amazing plays, comebacks….all on the opening weekend. And we still have games tonight as Tennessee hosts Utah State, Baylor vs. SMU, and on Labor Day Monday Miami plays Louisville.

College Football Week OneThe wacky world of College Football kicked off on Thursday night with a highly anticipated game between 2 SEC heavyweights, Texas A&M at South Carolina. SC was a big favorite and a team many had picked to win the East. They were coming off 3 straight 11 win seasons in a row. A&M lost Johnny Football, their top wide out in Mike Evans, and key offensive lineman. On top of that, they had the worst defense in the SEC last year. The atmosphere was freaking electric in Williams Brice Stadium. No problem for the Aggies as they came in and shredded the Gamecock defense. Kenny Hill lit up the SC secondary and Carolinas defense looked like last years version of the A&M defense!

What the HILL is going on here?? Kenny Hill from A&M may soon make Aggie fan forget about that guy named Johnny Football real soon! Level headed, confident, poised, Kenny methodically tore up the Gamecock defense in game one. A Heisman like performance. How about BYU QB Taysom Hill? He passed for over 300 yards and rushed for nearly 100 yards vs. UCONN. Another Heisman like performance. And what about LSU RB Kenny HILL..iard? When the Tigers needed it most, he blasted through the Badger line gaining big chunks of yardage to keep drives alive. Kenny finished with 110 clutch yards against a very physical Wisconsin bunch. What about Grant Hill, Calvin Hill, or even Hank Hill? It was a HILLeva great weekend!

There were the usual Week 1 payday games. You know the ones, top teams play the Little Sisters of the Poor for a big check to help add on to their weight rooms or do some stadium renovations. Games like Oregon vs. South Dakota, Michigan vs. Appalachian State, Oklahoma vs. La. Tech, Nebraska vs. Fla. Atlantic, Stanford vs. UC Davis, Michigan State vs. Jacksonville State, Arizona State vs. Weber State, Kansas State vs. Stephen F. Austin, USC vs. Fresno State, and UNC vs. Liberty. On the flip side, there were some GREAT Game 1 match ups. FSU really struggled with OK State, West Virginia vs. ‘Bama, Auburn vs. Arkansas, UCLA vs. Virginia, Georgia vs. Clemson, LSU vs. Wisconsin, and Texas A&M vs. South Carolina.

Penn State travels all the way to Ireland to kick a field goal at the horn to beat UCF. Great coaching debut for James Franklin! Heisman front runner Todd Gurley runs wild over Clemson as the Georgia Bulldogs smash the Tigers in the second half. Gurley rushes for 198 yards and returned a kickoff for 100 yards. Hate to say it, but it looked like Clemson quit late in the second half and barely put a hand on any of the Georgia runners. Over hyped UCLA scored 3 defensive TD’s in the second quarter at Virginia to escape with a win. Heisman hopeful Brett Hundley has a poor performance and in my opinion,  the UVA play calling late in the game was VERY questionable. UCLA has the toughest schedule in college football this year and if they struggle with UVA, what does that mean? Everett Golson was magical in his return to ND as he accounted for 5 TD’s in their blowout vs. Rice. Academic improprieties put him on the shelf last year and he returned with a vengeance! Is OK State that good, or, is FSU living on their past laurels? If FSU plans on making it to the Final 4, they better get it in gear real fast because everyone is gunning for them. Hyped Ole Miss was very ragged for 3 quarters and un-disciplined in their win vs. Boise State. ‘Bama struggled early but dominated late against a solid West Virginia team. Better not take the Mountaineers lightly this year!

Most impressive Week 1 wins: Texas A&M smashing South Carolina, Georgia spanking Clemson, Notre Dame dismantling Rice, and LSU coming back to beat Wisconsin. A&M has vastly improved on defense, their “O” line is as good as there is, Kenny Hill is rock solid at QB, and they have speed to burn on the outside. Typically, Georgia gets off to a slow start. Not yesterday! The Bulldogs just may be the team to beat in the SEC East. Good defense, strong on the “O” line, a powerful running attack, and a steady QB with very good receivers. ND, with 5 players suspended due to academic concerns, put all that aside and rolled Rice. Game of the day had to be Wisconsin and LSU. What a way to finish an awesome Saturday of College Football! The Badgers came out and played smash mouth football and took it to the Tigers. LSU hung in there and kept grinding until they finally took the lead late to win 28-24. Fournette’s hyped debut was a disaster and the QB play was inconsistent. The “Hat” pulled another trick out of his bag and finally got them going. Don’t fret Badger fan, you don’t play anybody the rest of the year and you should end up 11-1. With only 1 competitive game left on their schedule ( Nebraska – and they will have their typical 3 losses by then ) you will end up in the Top 10 and get a good bowl paycheck. This LSU win really makes the SEC West look impossible to predict. Wins by Alabama, Auburn, Texas A&M, LSU, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State make this the BEST division in all of College Football. Wait a minute, I thought the Talking Heads said the SEC was trending down???

Least impressive wins Week 1: Ohio State over Navy, UCLA tripping Virginia, FSU hanging on vs. OK State, UNC scoring late and often vs. Liberty. These Top 25 teams have got to be concerned after Week 1. With Braxton Miller out for the year at OSU, they may struggle a bit, even with their pitiful schedule ( 1 game vs. a Top 25 program all year ). UCLA better find an offense quickly if they want a Top 4 birth in the playoffs. You can’t expect to score 3 defensive TD’s every week! FSU got off to a blistering start and had to hang on against a very game OK State bunch. The good news for FSU is that they answered the bell every time OK scored. The bad news is everyone wants a piece of them and they do have a tougher schedule this year vs. last year. Repeating is tough and they are going to have to play their guts out week in and week out. UNC over Liberty. I know the Tar Heels are trying to get the program on top again, but what good does a comeback win against a team like this really do for you?? I guess opening with South Carolina  – and losing – like you did last year wasn’t the right way to schedule either.

WEEK 2 KEY GAMES

  • #5 Michigan State @ #3 Oregon
  • #14 USC @ #7 Stanford
  • NR Virginia Tech @ #11 Ohio State
  • NR Michigan @ #15 Notre Dame
  • NR East Carolina @ #19 South Carolina
  • #25 BYU @ NR Texas

Week 2 will offer a lot of dog games and a few classic games that will go a long way in determining the Final 4. If Michigan State wants a Final 4 birth, they HAVE to go to Oregon and win. Lose, and they may be out of the picture. Due to the Big 10’s weak strength of schedule, this is a Week 2 must win for the conference! The PAC 12 will be a dog fight this year and the USC @ Stanford winner will get a leg up on the rest of the field. Va. Tech has been a little down for the last few years. This is a HUGE game for Beamer Ball. Go to OSU and win and Tech gets back in the national spotlight. A loss by OSU and their season is spoiled. Sadly, this may be the last time we see one of the great rivalries in all of College Football – Meechigan and ND. A Notre Dame win and they move into the Top 10. A Michigan win, and they move in to the Top 25. Not too much at stake here!! ECU is coming off a 10 win season and they travel to Williams Brice. Their spread offense may give the Gamecock defense trouble once again. Hopefully, the SC defensive coaches can fix that Swiss cheese defense we saw last week! Huge game in this week in Texas. A BYU win really puts them on the radar again. If Texas wants to regain any glory and get the Charlie Strong era off to a good start, they must win.

A lot of great story lines, a lot at stake…just another great week of College Football!
