South Carolina Restaurant NCAA Violations

A South Carolina restaurant is going to need to print some new menus following what will surely be thorough conversations with the South Carolina and Clemson compliance departments.

The Daniel Island Grille in Charleston, SC., The Daniel Island Grille offers Clowney’s Turkey Avocado Wrap, Tajh Boyd Chicken Quesadillas and Sammy Watkins Reuben, which is not exactly cool with NCAA rules.

Considering the importance of Jadeveon Clowney to the Gamecocks and Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins to the Tigers, it’s not surprising the universities will be taking every possible step to retain the eligibility of their stars.

The rule in question is NCAA Bylaw 12.5.2.2., which states:

If a student-athlete’s name or picture appears on commercial items (e.g., T-shirts, sweatshirts, serving trays, playing cards, posters, photographs) or is used to promote a commercial product sold by an individual or agency without the student-athlete’s knowledge or permission, the student-athlete (or the institution acting on behalf of the student-athlete) is required to take steps to stop such an activity in order to retain his or her eligibility for intercollegiate athletics.

The Post and Courier got statements from both universities as they take the required steps to keep the potential first round picks on the field:

Clemson released the following statement to The Post and Courier on Aug. 7: “The Clemson Athletic Department works hand and hand with CLC and the University General Counsel to stop any unauthorized use of our student’s name or likeness.”

The online menu for the restaurant doesn’t list the college stars (although we’re unsure if they were ever there in the first place), but you can order items named after Andy Pettitte, Michael Phelps, Luca Brasi or Rocky Balboa, among many others.
