Ohio State And Boise State….A Tale Of 2 Big Time Football Programs

After reading all the publications, on line polls ( AP-Coaches-Sporting News-A To Z ), and listening to all of the Talking Heads, I can’t believe the love that Ohio State is receiving for the upcoming college football season.

Ohio State FootballSure, the Luckeyes have some talent, but their schedule is putrid and the Little 10 is a shell of what it used to be. With only 1 competitive road game all year ( the last game of the year vs. Michigan ), I got thinking about another school that gets criticized all the time for their “weak” schedule – Boise State.

Boise State has perhaps the second best coach in America right now, Chris Peterson. Since taking over the Broncos in 2006, Coach Peterson is 84-8! That is an astounding .913 winning percentage.

Imagine what he could do at a school like……let’s say LSU??? With that talent and his offensive genius/creativity, the Tigers might be rolling the Tide! Since 1999, Boise is 9-4 in bowl games with 2 BCS victories.

In 2006 they beat mighty Oklahoma and Big Game Bob 43-42 ( OT ) in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl – one of the greatest bowl games ever.

Boise State is also 49-4 since ’09 and has never finished higher than 4th in either the AP or coaches poll. So, here is a program often maligned for a soft schedule that does all the right things and never gets the national love. I thought the name of the game was to win?

On the other hand, we have Ohio State. Since 1999, they are 7-6 in bowl games ( 1-5 versus the SEC ) including 2 thrashings in the BCS National Championship games against Florida in ’07 and LSU in ’08. Since 2009, they have had 3 coaches – Jim Tressel, Luke Fickell, and now Urban ( I can’t take the pressure at Florida anymore ) Meyer.

In 2010, the Luckeyes finished 12-1 but vacated all of those wins, the conference championship, and the Sugar Bowl victory due to NCAA infractions.

The program has come under fire recently with all of the suspensions, arrests, and violations. While at Florida from 2005 to 2010, the Gator program ( under the leadership of Urban ) had 31 arrests. I am not even going to address Aaron Hernandez!

So, let me see if I understand this correctly. You play in a weak conference, play a weak schedule, and get no respect. Sounds like the continuing saga of Boise State. You play in a weak conference, play a weak schedule, and get voted #2 with the easiest path to the BCS National Championship. Sounds like this years Ohio State. I am really confused now!

All we can hope for at this point is that OSU beats up on those perennial powers Buffalo, Cal, Florida A&M, San Diego State, Indiana and gets voted #2 in the country. That way they will face an SEC powerhouse ( South Carolina or Georgia or Florida or Alabama or Texas A&M or LSU ) in the BCS National Championship game and get thrashed once again in front of millions of viewers, and the fraud known as Thee Ohio State Buckeyes, will get exposed once again!
