Haiti Earthquake: 360° Video

UN: Haiti calls off search and rescue

Saying there is little hope of finding more people alive more than 10 days after the earthquake, Haiti’s government declared the search and rescue phase for survivors over, the United Nations said Saturday.

The government’s Friday afternoon decision does not mean rescue teams still looking for survivors would be stopped, a U.N. spokeswoman told the Associated Press.

On Friday, Cuba helped expedite the process by agreeing to let all U.S. military and civilian aircraft carrying humanitarian relief fly straight to the Guantánamo Bay Navy Base through Cuban airspace.

The statement from the U.N. came a day after rescue workers freed a 22-year-old man entombed in the ruins of Port-au-Prince for 10 days.

The U.N. said anywhere from 500,000 to 700,000 survivors are living in squalid tent cities that have sprouted around Port-au-Prince.

YaVaughnie Wilkins Photos

The Time Square billboard featuring Oracle president Charles Phillips and his jilted lover, YaVaughnie Wilkins, has been taken down, but by now the message is out.

Wilkins rounded up $250,000 and got revenge, said the paper. She put a billboard in New York’s Time Square, one in Atlanta, and one in San Francisco, where Oracle is based.

A millionaire businessman who advises Barack Obama on economic policy has been forced to admit an affair after a series of giant billboards showing him with his long-time mistress appeared across America.

Leach, Texas Tech Ordered to Mediate

LUBBOCK, Texas — The judge in Mike Leach’s lawsuit against the university has ordered the sides to try to work out a resolution.

State District Judge William Sowder on Thursday ordered Leach, Texas Tech and their attorneys to complete mediation by Feb. 5. He also placed gag order on the talks.

Texas Tech Red Raiders fire Mike Leach – ESPN

The university fired Leach on Dec. 30, two days after it suspended him amid allegations he mistreated a player with a concussion. His suit includes allegations of libel and slander and breach of contract.  Read full story here

Letter sent to Leach before he was fired

Dear Coach Leach,

As you know, we have been conducting an inquiry into allegations by a student athlete that your treatment of him, subsequent to his being diagnosed with a mild concussion, may have been injurious to his health and served no medical and/or educational purposes. Texas Tech takes these allegations very seriously. In addition to being unacceptable, if proven, these allegations constitute a breach of your employment contract.

So that we can carry out an inquiry that takes into account the safety of our student athletes and in addition, that is fair to the students, yourself, and the university, we have determined that you must abide by the following guidelines from this day forward:

1. All practices and other team meetings will be monitored by the athletic director or his representative. (Crossed out with the initials GB beside it.)

2. Any player claiming an injury will be examined by a physician and cleared in writing prior to practicing or playing. Decisions regarding whether an injury warrants suspension from practice and/or play will be determined by a physician without pressure from you or your staff.

3. You must recognize that the players you are working with are student athletes and that you have an obligation to treat them with respect and further to conduct yourself in a manner consistent with your position as an instructor of students.

4. You must at all times assure the fair and responsible treatment of student athletes in relation to their health, welfare, and discipline, and if you are not doing so, you must immediately cease any actions not in compliance with this provision of your contract.

5. There will be no retaliation against any student who has suffered an injury.

Again, these allegations are serious, and should they be substantiated will result in disciplinary action ranging from public or private reprimand, monetary fines or adjustments in compensation, adjustments in the term of this contract, up to termination.

Sincerely,

Guy Bailey

Mike Leach Attorneys Seek Speedy Trial

Attorneys for fired coach Mike Leach said Thursday they want to take Texas Tech to trial in the next six weeks and want to question some of the key figures in his dismissal.

The coach’s legal team filed court documents Thursday asking a state district judge to allow them to question administrators and others in about two weeks. One person they want to question is Adam James, the sophomore receiver whose family complaint about how Leach him after a concussion ultimately led to the coach’s firing last month.  Read full story here

Wide Reciever Dan Buckner leaves Texas following Arrest

Former Texas wide receiver Dan Buckner has enrolled at Arizona for the spring semester and plans to join Mike Stoops’ team after sitting out a redshirt season.

Buckner transferred from the Texas program last week less than 24 hours after he was arrested in College Station, Texas, on charges of criminal trespassing and resisting arrest.

He was released from jail after posting bonds totaling $8,000 shortly after that incident.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound sophomore from Allen, Texas, appeared in all 14 games for the Longhorns in 2009, including six starts. He produced 45 catches for 442 yards and four touchdown grabs to rank as Texas’ third-leading receiver.

But 29 of those catches came in the first five games of the season as Buckner saw his playing time limited later in the Longhorns’ 13-1 season.

He had one catch for minus-3 yards in Texas’ national championship game loss against Alabama and only seven catches over the final four games of the season as his flex end position was gradually phased out of the Longhorns’ attack by offensive coordinator Greg Davis.

Buckner will sit out the 2010 season at Arizona, but will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Wildcats beginning in 2011.

How Old is Madonna, Hope for Haiti Performers

Question of the day….How old is Madonna?

Age: 51 years (born 16 August 1958)

Madonna ‘Like A Prayer’ To ‘Hope For Haiti Now’ Telethon

Backed by a choir, Madonna performed her 1989 single “Like a Prayer” at the “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon on Friday (January 22). She performed in the telethon’s New York studio, as did Bruce Springsteen, Shakira and Sting.

Haiti quake death toll reaches more than 111000

The arrangement of “Like a Prayer” took its cues from the original version’s instructions to “let the choir sing,” with the only non-vocal instrumentation provided by a guitarist and a keyboard player. It was a shining performance, with the choir serving as a perfect counterpoint to Madonna’s vocals.  Video

Stars Team for Hope For Haiti telethon

There was heartbreak in prime time tonight, as dozens of television networks — as well as many radio stations and Web sites — broadcast the “Hope For Haiti Now” telethon.

Alicia Keys opened the show with a solo version of her “Prelude To a Kiss,” accompanying herself on piano.

“Can you send an angel?” she sang, repeatedly, in the chorus, her voice swelling with emotion.

For two hours, A-list musicians ranging from Bruce Springsteen to Madonna performed songs of sorrow and inspiration in New York, Los Angeles and London studios. There were no standard show-biz introductions, no audiences to offer applause, and no commercials to break the mood.

Haiti-born Wyclef Jean talked about traveling to the country, after the Jan. 12 earthquake, to “pull my friends from the rubble.”

“From the ashes, we shall rise,” he pledged.

“The Haitian people need our help,” said George Clooney, at the start of the show. “They need to know that they’re not alone. They need to know that we still care.”  Read full story here
