Derek Dooley Staff Changes

Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley announced Sunday the additions of two former assistants to his new staff.

Terry Joseph and Eric Russell, both of whom worked under Dooley during his three seasons at Louisiana Tech, have agreed to join Dooley at UT.

Russell has experience with big-time football, after coaching with Mike Leach’s Texas Tech team as a special teams coach.

Bleacher Report

Russell, 42, was special teams coordinator at Texas Tech in 2009. Last season, the Red Raiders were third in the Big 12 in kickoff returns and third in kickoff coverage, and freshman Eric Stephens ranked second in the league with a 25.7-yard average on kickoff returns.

An Idaho native, Russell arrived in Lubbock, Texas, after two seasons in the same position at Louisiana Tech under Dooley. In 2007, Russell helped make the Bulldogs one of the top overall return teams in the country.  Tech ranked eighth nationally in punt returns and 26th in kickoff returns.

Joseph, 36, doubled as Louisiana Tech’s secondary coach  and recruiting coordinator, helping turn around a Bulldogs defense that ranked dead-last in the country the year before his arrival in both total defense and scoring defense.

He also played a major role in assembling Tech’s 2009 recruiting class, which ranked second in the Western Athletic tabbed Joseph as the No. 4 recruiter from a non-BCS school in 2008.

Former quarterbacks coach David Reaves, offensive line coach James Cregg and wide receivers coach Kippy Brown parted ways with Tennessee on Saturday. Defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron followed Lane Kiffin to Southern California.
