Christian Ponder Pivotal Player, Leader for FSU Football

TALLAHASSEE — The staple of Florida State’s two national championship runs was consistency at quarterback.

For the first time in what feels like forever for FSU coach Bobby Bowden, the Seminoles have an unquestioned starter and leader at the position in Christian Ponder. This season Ponder isn’t fighting to keep his job. It’s his.

FSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher chose Ponder as the starter in 2008 from of a three-way battle between D’Vontrey Richardson and three-year starter Drew Weatherford. Ponder earned most of the work, but Richardson, who is now playing professional baseball, was used in specific packages and challenged for the starting role through the first half of the season.

FSU Players Regret Cheating

Talented freshman E.J. Manuel is Ponder’s backup this season, but this is Ponder’s team.

“This year that distraction has went away,” Fisher said. “And it’s had a good impact on him to increase the comfort zone.”  Read full story here
